Find out what Disciples of Christ minister George Darsie (1846-1904) was up to 125 years ago today. He now has his own Twitter at www.twitter.com/GeorgeDarsie, and he will be sharing his 1884 diary, beginning August 14.
Who was George Darsie? Born in Fayette, Pennsylvania, he studied at the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (now Hiram College) in Hiram, Ohio, and Bethany College, from which he graduated in 1868. He spent most of his pastoral ministry at First Christian Church of Frankfort, Kentucky, beginning in 1876 and ending in 1903. In 1871 he married Coranelle Campbell, who outlived him by many years. Archibald McLean described George Darsie as “one of the manliest of men. He was an example to the believer in word, in manner of life, in faith, in love, in purity. He was an ideal Christian gentleman.”
Learn what it was like to be a preacher in the first century of the Stone-Campbell movement. Read about the challenges and the joys of daily life in 19th century Kentucky (and occasionally other places) in the days before television, radio, movies, indoor plumbing, and heated baptistries.
Return each day to see what Brother Darsie has been up to, whether it’s making peace among the brothers and sisters, preparing his weekly sermon, “raspberrying” with his beloved Coranelle, or struggling to catch some trout for the dinner table. It’s an up close and personal look at a life dedicated to Christ and lived in a time far different from our own. Enjoy your journey into Disciples history.
Brother Darsie joins the Twitter community on August 14, 1884. He and Coranelle are in Colorado prospecting for silver…
